About Jenufa
In this tale of love, betrayal, violence, murder and forgiveness set in
a tightly knit community, the playwrights Gabriela Preissová (1862–1946)
and Timberlake Wertenbaker chart the conflict between life and honour,
pride and love.
Její pastorkyňa (Her Stepdaughter) by Gabriela Preissová caused a
scandal in Prague where it was first performed in the1890’s. It won a
worldwide acclaim as JENUFA, an opera by Leoš Janáček, but has never been
seen in Britain as a play.
Multi-Award winning writer Timberlake Wertenbaker’s other plays
include: Our Country’s Good, The Love of the Nightingale, Three Birds
Alighting on a Field and Credible Witness. For the last 7 years
Christopher Sivertsen has been a key member of Song of the Goat Theatre
Company, last seen at the Barbican Centre and at the RSC.
Reviews
"Nothing could have prepared me for this play other than the reputation
of Wertenbaker and of Dionisotti. Nothing can be said about this play
other than that it is the most powerful and moving drama presented by a
skilled and committed cast of actors who evoke a stifling world of
unrequited love and oppression" Kevin Quarmby
"Devastating" Rogues & Vagabonds
"Arcola makes the National look like a parochial paddler" Nicholas
